What to Do With a Maybe

When talking to prospects you often find it hard to get them to make a decission. They have probably said that they are “busy”, they need to “think” about this more or may not be returning your calls. Don’t get discouraged, that happens. It’s time for YOU to move the conversation forward and get an answer. YES is best, NO is ok, but maybe does not work.

 

People make decisions on emotions and most do not like making decisions. You see, decisions come with responsibility. We need to help them understand how BIG this business is and create URGENCY to get them to make a decision.

 

Call your prospect and let them know how well things are going for you and the company. Tell them that you have set aside time to help them with their business, but with all the new people joining and the interest from others, you need them to make a decision today, so you can plan your next 30 days. If they are not ready to make a decision today, you must move on and help others who are ready to enroll when you have time to help them.

 

Example: “Hey, Jamie: I am so excited about how well I am doing with my business. My company is exploding and people are taking notice. I am calling today to let you know that I have requests from others I have shown this presentation and they are asking me when I can help them get their business started. As I said before, you were someone I first thought about when joining. I want you to join my team and I want to help you get others to do the same. I really need to know if you are going to join today because I have a lot of people who are in your position that want to get started, but I have committed to your success. Can you please give me an answer today?”

 

Remember, there are 300 million people in the U.S. and if you are able to get 1,000 to join your business and they each just gather 10 customers each, you will have 10,000 customers. Everyone will not join, but some will and those will lead us to potentially thousands.

The Fortune is in the Follow Up

In business there is a saying that the fourtune is in the follow up.  One statistic says that the average is 7 contacts with a person before they are ready to buy from you.  If you stop trying they will take their money elsewhere. 

 

 

The initial contact is important.  If you left a message or they said “they need to think about it”, now it’s time to be VERY PERSISTENT! As a Leader in business, it’s important to understand that you do two things. First, you attract people and Second, you motivate them. Your local College Basketball Coach is a perfect example. Do they call a prospect once and never call them again? How many phone calls do you think Patton Manning received from Tennessee before he decided to go there? How many times do you think Dean Smith called Michael Jordan before he went to North Carolina? Once? Twice? Three Times? If you were Dean Smith and you knew what you know now, would you say “As many times as it takes”?

 

Yes, you would!

 

We do not expect everyone to buy, but we do expect everyone to make a decision. Yes is great! No is great! We do not accept maybe!

 

Contact them as many times as it takes to get an answer! If they will not return your calls, put them on your “Call every 30 days list” and call them every 30 days to tell them how excited you are about your business and how much you want them to join your team.

 

There is a saying in our industry: “Some will, Some won’t, So what?”. Some people will see this business the same way you did and they will join immediately. Some people will not see the business the way you did and they will not join immediately. We always focus on the positives and seek out the people who see what we see! The others will join eventually, that’s why we have to keep reminding them how GREAT this opportunity is.

I Finally Got a Blackberry

A couple weeks a go I finally broke down and got a Blackberry.  I have heard about the benefits of the smartphones for a long time, but I never took advantage of them, until now.  This thing is amazing.

I got the Blackberry 8830 world edition.  I can now keep my calander and contacts on me all the time.  I have loaded a facebook app and a number of other apps that help me be more productive.  I can send and recieve emails at any time without being tied down to the desktop or a laptop.  The blackberry maps program is great too.

The best part about the whole thing is that I am my own customer.  I am an independent representative with Lightyear Wireless.  Lightyear pays its representatives 1% to 10% on their personal customers.  They also allow you to build leverage finding other who like the idea of getting paid for services they use anyways.  You earn 1% to 4% on your teams monthly bills.  There are also many other bonus programs and other streams of income.

Better Budgeting

Part of working from home is spending the money you earn.  This is always the fun part, but it can be dangerous if you don;t know how your money is being spent.  There are business expenses associated with home businesses that can be deducted on your taxes.  The key to all of this is keeping track of your money.

Budgeting is essential for everyone.  People who budget properly have a better handle on where their money is going and are able to use it wiser.  Ken and Daria Dolan are personal finance radio hosts.  They have a method for tracking which expenses are essential and which are optional.

“Track where your money goes by listing every penny you spend for two months.  Afterward, review your list and mark each item with an ‘O’ for optional or ‘E’ for essential.  Aim: Eliminate as many optional expenses as possible without budgeting out your fun.”

Controlling Unnecessary Interuptions

Working at home is extreemly rewarding, but it has its chalenges too.  One of the biggest problems I have is interuptions from my family.  While searching for a solution to this problem I found something from Hyrum W. Smith, CEO of Franklin Quest.

“Control unnecessary interuptions at work with a point question.  This is a nonthreatening query designed to get to the cause of the interuption.  Examples: ‘How can I help you?’  ‘What can I do for you?’  ‘What brings you around today?’  The point question transfers ‘ownership’ of the conversation to the interupting person, in effect asking him/her to justify the intrusion - and preventing him from wasting your time.”

This ‘cut to the chase’ type of responce has worked well for me.  I’ve used it with my kids coming into my home office, as well as with interuptions from phone calls.  Getting through to the heart of the matter quickly allows you to make a judgement call about weather or not you should spend more of your valuable time on the matter.

A Dollar Saved

There was an airline captain in Wisconsin named Harold Moe.  He fought his way out of debt and learned a few lessons along the way.  One of those important lessons was on the importance of saving.

“A dollar saved is worth more than a dollar added to current income.  Reducing spending by a dollar lets you save the whole dollar.  But in order to spend an additional dollar, you have to make between $1.15 and $1.50(the added amount goes to taxes).”

This points out, again, the great advantage to owning a home based business.  There are so many tax savings that it is easier to keep more of the money you work for.  By far, someone who works from home pays less taxes than someone making the same amount at a traditional job.

Are You Efficient With Your Time?

Time is the one commodity that every one has in common.  We all have 24 hours in a day to get our work done.  So, the question becomes, how do we use our time better to achieve the success we want in life?

I read a great idea by Catherine Bower recently.  She gave a simple way to analise your priorities.  The first thing you need to do is list all your projects for three months.  Then devide this list into two categories - one for significant responsabilities and the other for those of little importance.

Rate each item with a score of one to three points.  One point for the jobs you complete ahead of time, and two points for the jobs you finish on time.  The jobs you are late on get three points.

You then rate the same jobs again, but this time you look at job quality.  If the way you handled the job initially was correct then give the job an A.  If the approach needed modification, it gets a B.  Give the job a C if you missed the mark on it.

Now that you have honestly scored your work performances over the last three months you can look back and see how your priorities have been set.  If you prioritize well you should score better on the major projects.  However, if you score better on projects of little importance, your spending too much time on inconsequential work.

When working from home and being your own boss you need to be able to see the big picture and prioritize properly.  There is a lot of money to be made at home.  Again, time is the only thing we all have in common, we must spend it wisely.
