Have You Experienced Enough Pain For Change?
Have You Experienced Enough Pain For Change? by Adam Khoo
Let us go through it one by one. Step one, find enough reason to change the belief. See, many years ago, Socrates, a greek philosopher said this, he said, “Men will never change for the better until he sees the need for it”.
Same thing for beliefs. You will never change your belief until you really see the need for it. But remember, we do not do things out of logic, we do things out of emotions. You can know, you can think and you can believe that you should change your beliefs but unless you emotionally feel there is a must, you will never change.
So the first step to changing our belief is to find a strong enough reason to change it. Again many of us do not change because we are in a situation where although we are not satisfied with the results we are getting, we still do not face enough pain enough for us to want to change.
There is a saying that says, “Without pain there can be no change”. I used to believe that for example, I could never pass my running test. And this was attributed to the fact that I kept giving up once I felt exhausted and I kept using this as an excuse for constantly failing a 2.4km run, in the standard physical fitness test, and nothing could make me want to change my belief, although logically I wanted to change.
So, what really made me change? What made the powerful shift was one day in the army, I was sent to officer cadet school and I met this really mean platoon commander who said that, “Any one who did not get a gold standard in running will have to serve a four weekend confinement in the barracks”.
They would not be allowed to go home. Now, for me I have never passed my physical fitness test in my life, let alone get a gold. But the enormous pain of not changing was what got me to start believing that it was possible to get a gold and to start training for it until I made it.
And guess what, I did make it in the end. Unfortunately, many of us don’t have intimidating officers like that in our life to help us give us enough reason and pain to break our limiting beliefs and become better people.
So, we have to create enough reasons for ourselves to change. What is extremely powerful is to think of how would this limiting belief, how has it caused us in our lives and how will it continue to cause us in the future. Remember again, we are all driven by emotions, and not by logic.
You can have all the logical reasons why you must change but unless you imagine in your mind and you feel the pain of not changing and you create those images in your mind, and feel strong enough emotions to want to change, you will never do it.
