You’re the Opener and Your Card is the Closer

When you open a book the two most important parts of it are at the very beginning and the very end. If the beginning of the book isn’t good, if it doesn’t hook you right away, what are the odds that you’re going to continue reading through the rest of it? The book has to give you a reason to care first.

The end of the book is the final impression it makes on you. What might’ve started out as a great read will be viewed poorly if you simply hate the ending. Sure, the middle of the book is important, but it doesn’t have the same high standards applied to it that the beginning and end do.

These same principles can easily be applied to a sales pitch. Except in this scenario you personally are the opening of the book, and your custom business cards are the closer.

When you first start talking to someone it’s going to be completely about you. Whether or not they feel like listening to the rest of what you have to say is going to be dependent upon whether or not they like what you have to say. You have no marketing material to help you out when you first start speaking to them. You don’t even really having selling points yet. This is completely about you and how you first introduce yourself to them.

The weaker your introduction is the greater the chances are that they won’t bother to care about anything else you say.

Your custom business cards are likely to be the last thing you hand to them. This is the end of your first meeting with a person, and the last thing they will see in connection to you. That’s why you need to make sure that your business cards are as effective as they can be.

You have to give them something interesting, something memorable, and by doing so you’ll help to improve the image they have of you and be sure that they’ll remember you months down the line.

Just like with a novel, the middle of it is still important. You still need to look knowledgeable and know what you’re talking about, but nothing will change how important that first look and last look is. I’d say this is even more important when it comes to the business card because they’re literally keeping it with them. This is their souvenir from their conversation with you.

When you get your business cards printed ask yourself how well they’ll be able to close the sale and get a person interested in you. It’s up to you to hand them something that builds upon the good impression you’ve already been making, and ensures they never forget who you are.
